As well as "shops" and "shops" as noted above, The Independent used to do a deal that if you took a year's subscription, the book was thrown in for free. Anyone know if that's still going? It was a good deal.

I would suggest getting a car as soon as you feel comfortable doing so- either rent/buy depending on the length of your contract.
I just got a car now after three years here and wonder why I didn't do it before!
Granted, taxis are cheap compared to many other countries, however owning or renting your own car can end up cheaper depending on the amount and type of travelling you'll be doing- and also you'll feel more able to experience many areas and elements of the UAE that otherwise feel like too much effort or cost to explore.
I highly recommend it!

Also, if you're looking to send money back (again the cost/value of this will depend on the amount you're looking to send back), I've found that Al Rostamani on Electra Street (near the Najda St intersection) are very good and offer competitve rates. The transfer has always gone successfully with them when I've used them (not that I've tried anywhere else!).
But if you open a bank account out here, beware that the exchange rate offered by the bank will often be more expensive than using a separate exchange shop.

We will be moving to Abu Dhabi in the next few months and appreciate these tips I have a copy of the explorer guide which is really useful
