Agreed!
I did four different jobs before nurse training in my twenties including the Navy, Civil Service, bar work and office work.
Nursing in those first few years was by far THE most tiring and stressful times of my life (before emigrating, ha ha!!) and I was healthy, fit and enthusiastic with no kids.
What people don't realise is that Nursing drains you like no other work can. Add in to the mix high rates of divorce, mental health issues, physical issues (think back injury - anyone that says this is a thing of the past is living in cloud cuckoo land) and suicide and you have a dangerous career path
Sorry, I'm on a roll here folks
And I might add, catching every cold, flu, CDiff, Norovirus, needlestick injury risks, dealing with the MOST disgusting vomit, phlegm, faecal matter, smelly urine and 'eye watering' wounds and injuries and being soaked in someone's blood not to mention dead bodies and the heartbroken relatives you then need to console. These are the rites of passage for any nurse and fobbing off these tasks to an HCA is 'not cool'. Some nurses nowadays see these parts of the job as beneath them and it's not good for public attitudes towards qualified nurses.
Yes, it's rewarding, fascinating, satisfying and has been an absolute priviledge to care for some of the patients I've met but the trade offs can sometimes be too high a price to pay.
Best of luck to her if she's determined but it really needs lots of consideration.
Personally, I won't be changing my career despite going from a Band 7 to Band 5 equivalent as I see my work as a vocation not just a job.
