There is an offshore industry in NZ but I wouldn't think there was enough to sustain many scaffolders. I managed 2 trips off the Naki but most of my work was off Ozzie and even that is limited. I ended up going to the Gulf of Thailand and Qatar for most of my work until I gave it all up for a life onshore. (Personal reasons also played a big part). After 20 years offshore I was used to spending days at airports but commuting to anywhere from NZ just makes it 3 times worse and of course limits the options for employers, if they are paying for the flights and day rate in transit.
However like BEVS says there would be work for ever for scaffolders in Chch for the rebuild - good luck!
