I thought something similar happened a few years ago...a large plane (cargo I think) disappeared. It was eventually found but I can't remember where.

Oh this hunch was mooted on the prof pilots site, and an observation that there are plenty of remote like islands in the Indian Ocean, some with rather long runways and aircraft hangars (to hide a jet?).

Nothing would surprise me.

Yes I remember that, JG, but, like you, can't remember much.

I've just found an interesting Guardian article. You can read here:
http://www.theguardian.com/world/201...-brief-history

Basically saying that since 1948, 100 planes have disappeared without trace  Extraordinary. It gives a few examples. The one I like is the Varig Boeing 707 full of expensive paintings worth more than a million dollars, and it's never turned up

The Reuters news agency (my spouse works for them but is not a journo  ) is reporting in breaking news to the media and on their website:

"Exclusive - Radar Data Suggests Missing Malaysia Plane Flown Deliberately Towards Andamans - Sources"

'What we can say is we are looking at sabotage, with hijack still on the cards"

I have an idea it was a large TRUCK, or maybe a boat. I can't remember, either.

Malaysia plane crash news is being used for hacking purpose on facebook

Spammers are taking advantage of the lost Malaysian plan and spam spreading malware on the Facebook, abusing the mystery behind the Malaysia airplane MH370 that has gone missing by the time it flew from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.
The hackers are redirecting Facebook users to the malicious websites using a fake Facebook post, claims that missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370, a Boeing 777-200 aircraft has been found in the Bermuda Triangle with its passengers still alive and invites users to click a link to view breaking news video footage.
Title of the fake video: Malaysia Plane MH370 Has Been Spotted Somewhere Near Bermuda Triangle. Shocking Videos Release Today.

Not sure if there are any hangars, but the air strips belong to the Indian government who keep tabs on who comes and goes. I also read the Indians run military radar on the islands, so the chance of a 777 landing, or even ditching, unnoticed is not great.
